45 notesThe Big Bang Theory : Sheldon Asks Out Penny!
There are actually many Shenny shippers who didn’t like this scene, because they felt that this was the writers rubbing to our faces that they’re not happening. But I just liked it how he presented himself in that context. He was so certain for that action of his, there was no eye twitching, no creepy smile, nothing that would prove that he doesn’t know how to behave himself in these kinds of social circumstances. On the contrary, it was the Sheldon who closes the door behind him and who carries himself with confidence. No one forced him to do it, he took the initiative like he has done so many times with Penny. And then again there’s this who do we love line that felt like they began the scene by telling as who’s the one that he really loves, cause to his mind he’s The guy.
I think there’s sadly very little meaning in the actual scene. The writers were clearly playing with us. They did something bold (him asking her out), then took a step backwards by denying everything in a very sloppy way (but tbh I thought the whole episode was poorly written, the dialogues were flat, the cards plotline forced and boring and that new guy in the comic book store was FUCKING ANNOYING). And like I’ve always been thinking, the writers are never saying YES or NO. They have to keep all of us watching and talking. It’s like that 5x12 “we’re not a couple” scene - on the one hand, well that was a harsh denial. On the other - why did it even come up? Penny just randomly freaked out and denied being with Sheldon, Sheldon freaked out about her denying it and then denied it himself. And anyone can interpret it their own way.
But we shippers will forever have this one thing that keeps our ship sailing - natural chemistry. It’s clear how drawn they are to each other, even when the story is trying to tell us “NO”. And here comes everything you described, the way he did it, as if it wasn’t just to make Amy jealous until Penny mentioned it herself. And I love how Penny didn’t actually say no, although they could have written it - she could have said something like “No, I don’t want to go out with you”. But she didn’t. She just saw right through him like she always does and did what was right at that moment.
I actually always thought that her “the guy” speech didn’t mean anyone in particular. It sounded very banal and vague, and I don’t like to use it as a S/P evidence. And I don’t want Sheldon to be this “there was a guy”. I don’t want him to be in past tense for her. Just the guy she once had feelings for - it’s too simple for such complex relationship as Sheldon and Penny.
But the sheer fact that he thought she was talking abuot him was sweet, especially the way he said it, quietly and actually trying to be compassionate. Oh and the “who do we love” knock. Probably my favourite part of the scene, because he freaking knocked, stopped and waited for her to say it and then answered “Penny”. THREE TIMES. THAT’S LOVE BITCH.
Everything you said is just 100% true facts. I don’t think that Penny ever was meaning Sheldon, but I liked how he assumed so (cause he so easily could be). But I agree, this episode was just one big tease to us. The writers know we exist. They know we’re passionate. They know that the general audience and media is intrigued by these two and they keep teasing but giving us nothing - ultimately. And I think you’re analysis on “there once was a guy” makes me feel better/more hopeful to her reply of “you’re so not the guy”. Because I always want him to be present and in her mind always - even if loving him goes against everything she thought she wanted (same for him).

And he being the one who gives those reasons why he think is the guy, it’s just a clear example of how much he notices...
